American actor Steven Yeun, who goes by the stage name Yeun Sang-yeop, was born in South Korea (December 21, 1983).

Yeun’s parents are Je and Jun Yeun. On December 21, 1983, Yeun was born in Seoul. In South Korea, his father worked as an architect before moving his family to Canada and Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1988. His younger sibling is his Canadian-born brother, Brian. The family settled in Taylor, Michigan after coming to the country, then moved to Troy, Michigan, where Yeun stayed until he graduated from Troy High School in 2001. When Yeun was a child, her family spoke Korean at home. In Regina, he preferred Ruth M. Buck Elementary School.

Yeun was raised in a Christian household. His parents, who owned beauty supply stores in Detroit, began referring to him as “Steven” after he met a doctor with that name. He earned his bachelor’s in psychology with a neuroscience emphasis from Kalamazoo College in 2005. In Kalamazoo, he became friendly with the sister of improv comedian Jordan Klepper, and she took him to see Klepper perform. This inspired him to sign up for his first acting class, and he later joined Klepper at The Second City in Chicago after following him there.
