Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance is the Honourable Chrystia Freeland.
Ms. Freeland was first elected to the Toronto Centre constituency in July 2013.
She was first elected to the University—Rosedale constituency in October 2015, and she was re-elected in October 2019 and September 2021.
Ms. Freeland was Canada’s Minister of International Trade from November 2015 to January 2017, where she oversaw the successful negotiation of CETA, Canada’s free trade agreement with the European Union.
She was Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from January 2017 to November 2019.
During this time, she was a leading global advocate for democracy, human rights, and multilateralism.
Ms. Freeland was Canada’s Minister of International Trade from November 2015 to January 2017, where she oversaw the successful negotiation of CETA, Canada’s free trade agreement with the European Union.
She was Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from January 2017 to November 2019.
During this time, she was a leading global advocate for democracy, human rights, and multilateralism. She led and successfully concluded the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, Mexico, and the United States as Foreign Minister.
Ms. Freeland was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs in November 2019.
In this role, she oversaw Canada’s coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2020, she was appointed Minister of Finance.
