Ella was married to Benny Kornegay in 1941and was declared invalid in 1943, Ella Fitzgerald again married Ray Brown in 1947 and divorced in 1953, but with him they adopted their son Ray Brown Jr.
Fitzgerald had diabetes for a number of years in her later life, which had resulted in a slew of difficulties. Fitzgerald was briefly hospitalized for respiratory difficulties in 1985, congestive heart failure in 1986, and exhaustion in 1990.

She died at the age of 79 on June 15, 1996.
