Actress Miriam Margolyes, who was born on May 18, 1941, is British and Australian.
Her first acting roles were in the theater; following a number of supporting parts in movies and television, she was chosen to play Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series and won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993).
Margolyes has spent many years splitting her life between Italy, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
She has acted in plays in the UK and Australia, notably the Australian premiere of the play I’ll Eat You Last in 2013. In 2013, she obtained Australian citizenship.
Margolyes was the only child of Ruth (née Walters; 1905-1974), a property developer and the daughter of a second-hand furniture dealer and auctioneer in Kirkdale, Liverpool, who later moved to London, and Joseph Margolyes (1899-1995), a Scottish doctor and general practitioner from the Gorbals neighbourhood of Glasgow.
