Dawit, also known by the Anglicized form of his name, David, is one of four children. During the early 2000s, when hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees fled to Ethiopia to escape the violence, his father Jon was extensively involved in aiding the refugee situation.
Dawit’s mother Yeshi is from a prosperous business family in Ethiopia. Sara Eklund, his sister, was highlighted in a 2019 piece in Vogue for introducing menstrual cups to Ethiopia.
Eklund, who will age 33 the following week, is nine years older than Malia, who turned 24 on July 4. He attended the International Community School in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, prior to enrolling at George Washington University to study International Development in Africa.
Eklund is the son of former State Department officer Jon Eklund, 72, who worked at various US embassies in Africa, and his 66-year-old Ethiopian wife Yeshi.
