Ronald Wayne Van Zant, the father of Melody Van, first met Judy Seymour in 1969 at The Comic Book Club through Gary Rossington. He later married her in 1972 and they were blessed with only Melody.

In 1999, Judy Van Zant-Jenness opened Freebird Live, a music venue in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd souvenirs were inside, and Melody Van Zant shared possession of it.
