John Bannister Goodenough was an American materials scientist, solid-state physicist, and chemistry Nobel laureate who was born on July 25, 1922 and died on June 25, 2023.
Goodenough was born to American parents in Jena, Germany. Goodenough worked as a meteorologist for the American military in World War II both during and after receiving his degree from Yale University.
After earning his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago, Goodenough worked as a researcher at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory before moving on to become the director of the inorganic chemistry laboratory at the University of Oxford.
At the University of Texas at Austin, Goodenough teaches mechanical, materials science, and electrical engineering. Most people consider Goodenough’s work on computer random-access memory and the Goodenough-Kanamori criteria for determining the sign of magnetic superexchange in materials to be his contributions. In addition, Goodenough is well known for finding and developing the lithium-ion battery.
